Early years: Greenwich workers threaten to strike

1 min read
Up to 200 nursery nurses employed by Greenwich council could go on strike in the latest development of a long-running pay dispute.

Unison members at 11 primary schools and three nurseries in the southLondon borough have campaigned for better pay and conditions for twoyears.

The union is calling for the role of nursery nurses to be regraded fromlevel three to five, which would mean an increase in maximum pay fromjust over 16,600 to more than 21,000.

"Their roles have changed significantly over the past 10 to 12 years yetthe employer hasn't changed their job descriptions," explained Unisonbranch secretary Onay Kasab. "As a result pay has fallen behind."

Regrading would reflect nursery nurses' increased teaching role and workwith children with special educational needs as well as bringing it inline with neighbouring London boroughs, he added.
