Early years: Call for medical training and advice

A lack of training on invasive medical procedures means children with complex needs are being excluded from early years settings, says a new Ofsted report.

There is wide local variation in advice, training and support forproviders on procedures such as tube-feeding and using epipens, thereport says. It also highlights a lack of formal guidance on providingtraining.

The report, Removing Barriers: A 'Can-do'Attitude, recommends thedevelopment of clearly accredited and nationally recognised training oncaring for special educational needs children.

Lesley Campbell, Mencap's national children's officer, said a proposednational centre for early intervention could play a major role inachieving this.
