Qualified teachers in early years settings overlooked for training opportunities

1 min read Early Years
Qualified teachers working in early years settings are more likely to miss out on opportunities for training and development, according to a report seen exclusively by CYP Now.

The report, Working Together Better, published by the General Teaching Council (GTC), was based on a seminar of qualified teachers and early years professionals, run jointly with union Aspect. According to the report, many qualified teachers working in early years settings feel at a "double disadvantage" because they are low down in the pecking order for early years and general teacher training.

"Qualified teachers are not seen as a priority among early years staff in terms of training opportunities, as they are already relatively highly qualified. But it also seems a lot of professional development for teachers ignores or sidelines early years staff," said Emma Westcott, senior policy adviser at the GTC.
