Early years: Calderdale pilots quality initiative

Calderdale's early years team is to introduce a quality assurance scheme for childcare providers in the borough.

Under the Steps to Quality scheme, providers - from child minders to daynurseries - will undergo a three-step programme to reach a standard of"top quality" childcare.

Step one is the basic standard, which ensures the main policies andprocedures are in place. Step two looks at how the service is provided, while step three looks at evaluating the service.

Calderdale council will pilot the scheme in 10 to 12 childcareservices.

Amanda Coates, acting head of Calderdale council's early yearsdevelopment and childcare partnership, said: "The pilot will beevaluated by working with the setting as well as through an internalevaluation."
