DRUGS: Shock tactics don't work

The word drugs is often uttered in the same breath as sex and rock'n'roll.

It is pretty much implicit that danger, risk and an ill-conceived glamour are involved. So it is hardly surprising that everyone from schools to the police are intent on countering such perceptions with a few well-chosen images of their own.

It was hoped that releasing graphic pictures of the death of 21-year-old heroin addict Rachel Whitear as part of an anti-drugs campaign last year would shock young people into abstinence. Preaching the horrors of drug abuse in a bid to make young people "just say no" has long been used as a preventive strategy, perhaps understandably given that drug-related crime accounts for a very large percentage of the UK's prison population.
