Drugs: Police group issues school arrest guide

The document by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), developed with drugs information charity DrugScope, stresses that in some cases it may be better for a pupil to be dealt with by the school or college rather than arrested.

The Joining Forces guidance - which covers working with schools and colleges on drug policy development, education, and managing drug-related incidents - was produced to clarify the role of the police, and ensure there is a standard approach.

It repeats Department for Education and Skills guidance that it is up to the head teacher to decide if random drug testing is useful. However, it does warn that the practice has not been proved to reduce drug use.
