Disability: Advocacy project is facing closure

A project to develop advocacy for young people with learning disabilities has been unable to secure funding to continue its work despite a huge shortage of services.

The Sounds Good Project, hosted by the Advocacy Resource Exchange, worked with young learning disabled people and identified a vital needfor advocacy during key transition stages in their lives.

"Even with the best will in the world young learning disabled peoplewere not included in choices that would affect them," said directorNigel Caldwell.

He added that young people often did not feel comfortable contradictingparents or professionals, which was why advocacy support wascrucial.

The project was funded for three years by the Diana, Princess of WalesMemorial Fund, and produced successful guidance on youth advocacy. Butsince then the team has struggled to get further funding to work withspecial schools.
