Disabilities: Home adaptation means test ends

The Government is to abolish means testing of the grant that helps families in England adapt their home for a disabled child.

Baroness Andrews, parliamentary under-secretary of state at the Officeof the Deputy Prime Minister, said the changes to the DisabledFacilities Grant would bring "much needed relief" to all familiesstruggling to support a disabled child.

It brings England in line with Wales and Northern Ireland - Scotlanddoes not have the Disabled Facilities Grant process.

The cost of scrapping means testing of the grant is estimated to be12m a year, according to a review by Bristol University. ButAndrews said she was satisfied that local authorities had adequateresources to meet the additional demand. In September, her departmentannounced that the budget for the grant would be "substantiallyincreased" from April 2006.
