Dedicated to child health - Judith Ellis, RCPCH chief executive

Derren Hayes meets Judith Ellis, chief executive of the RCPCH.

Judging by the speed with which Judith Ellis speaks, she has a lot on her mind. Barely has she finished a sentence before a new one begins. But with 35 years' experience in the children and young people's health sector, Ellis, who became chief executive of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child health (RCPCH) last September, has extensive knowledge to draw on and plenty to say - by her own admission, she can be "too opinionated".

But it is her varied and deep background that is bound to have appealed to the college as it sought to replace the retiring Chris Hanvey. A career that started with a stint as a nurse at London's St Thomas' Hospital has taken in roles in research, academia, policy advice, nursing director at Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital, and chair of the Nursing and Midwifery Council, to name but a few.
