
Labour would overhaul the justice system for 18- to 20-year-olds with the aim of sending fewer young people into custody, Sadiq Khan, the shadow justice secretary, will say today. The Labour MP would consider extending the current regime for under-18s to all those under 21, which could see more young adults given community orders, including intensive monitoring, mandatory work and curfews instead of short jail sentences. Khan will make it clear in a speech to the Reform think-tank that he believes "this is an idea whose time has come", the Guardian reports.
The number of children living in relative poverty after housing costs has risen by 100,000 to 3.7 million between 2013 and 2014, government figures reveal. The household below average income figures also show that there are 200,000 more children in absolute poverty after housing costs over the past year.
