Cameron to revive plans to redefine the way child poverty is measured; 300 suspects identified in Rotherham child sexual exploitation investigation; and Labour MP calls for national police agency to tackle child abuse, all in the news today.

Prime Minister David Cameron is keen to revive plans to change the way child poverty is measured. The Guardian reports that Cameron discussed the issue with members of the Cabinet ahead of the publication of latest statistics that are expected to show child poverty increased for the first time in a decade.


An investigation into child sexual exploitation in Rotherham has identified about 300 possible suspects. The Guardian reports that the National Crime Agency's senior investigating officer, Steve Baldwin, said his team of 32 officers had identified more than 3,300 lines of inquiry since Professor Alexis Jay's report last year.


A new national police agency to investigate child abuse has been called for by Labour deputy leadership candidate Tom Watson. The West Bromwich East MP said police privately tell him they would be more effective if “specialists from different forces” could work together in a team, the Birmingham Post reports.


One in three children dislike exercise by the time they leave primary school, teachers have claimed in a survey. The Telegraph reports that a survey of 400 primary school teachers, carried out by Virgin Active and the University of Bedfordshire, found that nearly half claim primary school pupils are leaving school without “basic movement skills” to engage in physical activity.


A support programme for care leavers run by the Prince's Trust is helping young people to develop their personal and social skills, a study has found. Interim findings from the five-year From Care to Independence project, reveal that 98 per cent of participants felt that one-to-one sessions with advisers had helped them achieve their goals.
