1 min read
David Cameron urged to remove Justice Secretary Michael Gove from his post; six people are convicted of sexual abuse of teenage girls in Rotherham; and the number of young people who are Neet rises, all in the news today.

Michael Gove could be removed as Justice Secretary in the weeks following the referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union (EU), it has been claimed. The Telegraph reports he is facing the sack in the wake of his decision to back leaving the EU, with Prime Minister David Cameron being urged by ministerial allies to remove him from his post.

Six people have been convicted of the “systematic” sexual abuse of teenage girls in Rotherham and are due to be sentenced on Friday. The BBC reports that the six people include brothers Arshid and Basharat Hussain, who were found guilty of multiple rapes and indecent assaults, while a third brother, Bannaras Hussain, admitted 10 charges prior to trial.

The proportion of 16- to 24-year-olds in England who are not in education, employment or training (Neet) has risen. Office of National Statistics data shows that there were 853,000 Neet young people in October to December 2015, an increase of 5,000 from July to September 2015.

Cardiff Council has been criticised for closing a youth club, allegedly without warning parents in advance. Wales Online reports that a spokesperson for the council said the proposals were detailed clearly in the 2015/16 budget proposals but parents have claimed they were “kept in the dark” about the closure.

Bath Spa University has been granted funding for work to support emotional health in children. The Bath Chronicle reports that Somerset County Council has given the university’s Emotional Coaching project £50,000. Launched in 2015, the project is part of council plans to improve the protection and promotion of children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing.
