Daily roundup: Underage drinking, vocational education, and children's centres

Government told to crack down on parents buying children alcohol; Labour outline college plans; and fears 100 early years jobs could go in Leicester, all in the news today.

A leading think tank has called for tougher action on parents who supply their children with alcohol in order to tackle underage drinking. A report by Demos found that parenting styles and parents’ drinking behaviour significantly influence children’s future drinking.

Labour’s shadow education secretary Tristram Hunt has vowed to transform vocational education if the party wins the next general election. Speaking at the Association of Colleges conference in Birmingham yesterday, Hunt said the best colleges will be turned into institutes of technical education, where student will be able to access the new Technical Baccalaureate and apprenticeship training.

Union leaders have raised fears that more than 100 jobs could go from Leicester's children's centres by next April if plans to scale back some services are given the go-ahead. The Leicester Mercury reports that Leicester City Council wants to reduce services in the city's 23 centres in a move that would save £3.4m.
