Lord Baker unveils career colleges plans; extra funds for Welsh free childcare scheme; and social mobility tsar fears for children's future prospects, all in the news today.

A network of career colleges for 14- to 19-year-olds is to be established by Margaret Thatcher's former Education Secretary Kenneth Baker. Lord Baker wants the colleges to offer vocational training in a range of subjects including digital technology, construction, catering and healthcare, alongside teaching in core academic subjects. The first of what Lord Baker hopes is a network of colleges is to open in Oldham next year partnering with the University of Salford, reports the Independent.

 

Welsh Government’s has allocated £11m of additional funding to its early years Flying Start programme as part of its draft budget. Flying Start is currently accessed by 23,579 children and the Welsh Government is aiming to extend the scheme to cover 36,000 children and their families by the end of the Assembly term in 2016. It offers eligible parents free childcare for two and three year olds, parenting support, an enhanced health visitor service and help for early language development.
