
Almost half of all paedophiles convicted in England and Wales in 2012 avoided prison. The BBC reports that 107 paedophiles convicted of abusing children under the age of 13 were not jailed. The Ministry of Justice figures were released in response to a parliamentary question from shadow justice secretary Sadiq Khan.
The number of vulnerable children seeking support for cyberbullying has risen by 87 per in the last year, according to latest figures. ChildLine’s Can I Tell You Something? report also reveals a 69 per cent increase in the number of children experiencing racist bullying and a 35 per cent rise in the number of children feeling suicidal.
Salford City Council has announced plans to cut its children’s services budget by £5.6m. According the Manchester Evening News, a council-run children’s home will be closed as part of the funding cut. The council has been forced to reduce its entire budget by £25m.
Bath and North East Somerset Council has injected a further £500,000 into its early years budget, despite continuing with plans to reduce children’s centres services. According to the Bath Chronicle, the Lib Dem-led authority hopes the extra money will help with the provision of more targeted outreach support for pre-school age children.
