
One pound in every five spent on schools could be cut without damaging standards, a report has claimed. The Must Do Better report by think tank Reform found no clear link between more spending and higher achievement. The report has called for the lifting of the ring-fenced protection on school budgets. However the Association of School and College Leaders warned that cuts of 20 per cent would mean significant numbers of schools having to close.
Parents of regular truants in Wales are to face fines of up to £120. Walesonline.co.uk reports that the new measures, announced by Wales’ education minister Leighton Andrews, will come into force in September. An initial £60 fine will be handed to parents who fail to ensure their child attends school regularly, rising to £120 if it is not paid within 28 days.
A decision to remove three Eastern European children from foster parents who were members of Ukip was made in the “best interests of the children”, Rotherham Council has said following a review of the case. The Sheffield Star reports that a statement issued by the authority apologised for giving the impression that the removal of the children was solely because of the foster carers’ membership of UKIP.
