
The Department of Health has commissioned a study to find out if mobiles and wi-fi are damaging children’s brains. Carried out by Imperial College and the University of London, it will monitor the cognitive development of 11- to 14-year-olds through a mobile phone app that will capture the duration of calls, texts and internet use. Their brain function will be measured in Year 7 and again in Year 9, the Telegraph reports.
The proportion of children adopted by gay couples in Nottinghamshire is well above the national average, according to new figures. Last year, one in nine children was placed in a same-sex household, the county council said, compared with the national average of one in 15. Last year, 92 adoption orders were granted in the county, compared with 40 in the previous year, the BBC reports.
A new video campaign raising awareness of a form of eye cancer that typically affects young children has been launched by the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust. Actress and comedian Caroline Aherne, who was diagnosed with retinoblastoma as a baby, narrates the short film.
