Labour pushes for ban on smoking in cars carrying children; Gove gives Wilshaw vote of confidence over think tank reports; and children with mental health problems still detained in police cells, all in the news today.

The Labour party has tabled an amendment to the Children and Families Bill that would ban smoking in cars carrying children. According to the Daily Mail, shadow health secretary Andy Burnham says the ban will protect children from “preventable harm”. The amendment will be put to a vote in the House of Lords on Wednesday.

Education Secretary Michael Gove has backed the head of Ofsted over his claims that the Department for Education encouraged think tanks to criticise the inspectorate. Sir Michael Wilshaw was said to be "spitting blood" after the Times reported two right-leaning think tanks were about to call for a radical overhaul of the school inspection system. But Gove told Wilshaw his team had not briefed against Ofsted and were supportive of his leadership, the BBC reports.
