Daily roundup: Care applications, school holidays and social care

Data reveals increase in care applications; police chief urges leniency for school term-time leave requests from officers; and president of children's services directors criticised for social worker comments, all in the news today.

The number of care applications received by the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (Cafcass) in June has risen by two per cent on the previous year. Last month Cafcass received 866 applications, compared to 853 in June 2013/14. The latest data also shows that Cafcass received 10,608 applications between April 2013 and March this year.

A police chief has called on schools to “look favourably” on term-time holiday requests from officers. The Telegraph reports that Humberside chief constable Justine Curran wrote to headteachers asking them to be leniant towards officers taking their children out of school because the busiest periods for police overlap with school holidays. Her request comes as a Coventry couple were given criminal records for taking their children on holiday during term time. The Coventry Telegraph reports that the pair were given conditional discharges.
