1 min read
Education Secretary Nicky Morgan defends government's academies plan; children as young as 11 victims of revenge porn; and increase in children in Kent found in possession of offensive weapons, all in the news today.

Education Secretary Nicky Morgan has said the government will be pressing ahead with plans to force all schools to become academies by 2020. The BBC reports that, when questioned by the education committee, Morgan said the plans will create a "strong, consistent system".

Children as young as 11 have been victims of revenge porn, according to figures. The Mirror reports that there have been more than 1,000 victims of revenge porn in the first year of legislation that makes it an offence to share private sexual photographs or films without the subject's consent coming into effect.

There has been an increase in the number of children being caught with offensive weapons in schools across Kent. Kent Online reports that there were eight reports of crime involving under-18s with offensive weapons at schools last year, compared with just three reports in 2011.

A number of councillors at Buckinghamshire County Council failed to attend a top-level training session to spot the signs of child sexual abuse. Buckingham Today reports that voluntary training sessions were put on in the same week as seven men were charged with sexual offences against a young girl in the county.

Taxi drivers in County Durham are to undergo training to spot the signs of child sexual exploitation. The Northern Echo reports that all drivers licensed by the council will be required to undergo training after the suggestion gained the support of more than half of respondents to a consultation.

A children's centre could be saved from closure by Oxfordshire County Council. The Oxford Times reports that the centre in Wallingford is leased by the county council and run by Action for Children, but now the town council wants to end the lease and take it back and try "a different approach".
