Daily roundup 12 October: Revenge porn, homelessness and gangs

1 min read
Children as young as 12 reporting revenge porn; homeless young people turned away from local authorities; and an increase of youth gang offences in London, all in the news today.

Children as young as 12 have reported cases of revenge porn to police since the law was introduced in April this year. The Guardian reports that the vast majority of cases involved explicit images of females shared without permission by their male ex-partners.

At least 30,000 young people that are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless are turned away from local authorities in England and Wales every year. The BBC reports on a Freedom of Information request that found only 40 per cent of young people asking for support last year were given an assessment for emergency housing eligibility.

Youth gang offences in London have increased by 23 per cent in the past year. The Guardian reports that knife crime with injury in the capital has gone up by 14 per cent while serious youth violence has increased by eight per cent, according to figures from the Mayor’s Office for Policing And Crime (MOPAC).

Barnardo's has taken over the running of 14 children's centres in the London borough of Brent, with a handover completed last week. The charity has agreed a four-year partnership with Brent council, saving the authority around £750,000 after it was hit by funding cuts from central government.
