
Children will no longer face prosecution if they are caught "sexting" naked photographs as long as the pictures are consensual. The Daily Mail reports that guidance issued by the College of Policing said police forces should adopt a "common sense approach" when told that young people are exchanging explicit images.
The mother of murdered six-year-old Ellie Butler has launched a bid to challenge her conviction. The Mirror reports that Ben Butler, Ellie's father, was convicted of killing the child in a fit of rage in June and jailed for a minimum of 23 years, while Ellie's mother, Jennie Gray, was handed a 42-month term after she was found guilty of child cruelty. A Court of Appeal spokesman confirmed that she had made a "late application" for permission to appeal in relation to both child cruelty and perverting the course of justice.
A council in Kent has taken the decision to run youth support services in-house nearly a year after councillors agreed to look at handing them to an outside firm. Kent Online reports that that Medway Council agreed to look at moving the department out of its direct control as a way of coping with budget cuts, but now it will continue to run the service, which includes six youth centres and Medway youth parliament.
An investigation into how the national child abuse inquiry investigated allegations of sexual assault on its premises is to be carried out by an external lawyer. The Guardian reports that Professor Alexis Jay was urged by MPs to sanction an independent examination of claims made by a junior member of staff that they were assaulted by the former senior counsel to the inquiry.
Four ex-footballers have appeared together to tell of how they were abused as children by a youth coach. The BBC reports Andy Woodward, who was the first to go public, wept as Chris Unsworth and Jason Dunford spoke for the first time of being abused by former Crewe Alexandra coach Barry Bennell.
