Schools to decide whether to go ahead with exams following Manchester attack; Tory free breakfast pledge amounts to 7p per child; and significant rise in reports of child labour exploitation, all in the news today.

Exam boards are telling schools affected by the Manchester attack that they can decide whether to go ahead with GCSE and A-level exams. The BBC reports that a joint statement from the exam boards says schools are "best placed" to make such a decision. Exam boards said no students will be "disadvantaged".


A Conservative pledge to give pupils free breakfasts at school comes with enough funding for 7p per child, it has been claimed. The Metro reports that the policy is costed at £60m - which works out at 6.8p per breakfast per pupil.


The number of children feared to be victims of labour exploitation in the UK has risen by more than 60 per cent in the past year, an analysis of government statistics has revealed. The Independent reports that there were 1,575 referrals for labour exploitation in 2016, among whom 1,107 were adults and a record 468 were children - marking a significant 63 per cent increase.


More than a million people under the age of 25 applied to be able to vote in the general election in the five weeks after the snap poll was called. The BBC reports that of these, 246,487 applied on Monday in the run-up to the 23:59 deadline.


Nearly 300 sex offenders have been investigated by Avon and Somerset police for committing sex crimes against children while on the sex offender register. Somerset Live reports that a freedom of information request found that 179 of those investigated are facing fresh charges.
