Investigation launched into police and council handling of child abuse in Rotherham; call to expand state boarding schools for poorer children; and Lib Dems pledge to expand free school meals if re-elected, all in the news today.

South Yorkshire Police has commissioned an independent investigation into its handling of the Rotherham child abuse scandal. The inquiry will "examine the role of both the police and council… and address any wrongdoings or failings", chief Constable David Crompton said. The BBC reports that the inquiry will be led by another police force.
