The National Crime Agency begins an investigation into Rotherham child abuse; 1.6m children take up free school meals; and children and families minister announces £31.7m SEN reforms fund, all in the news today.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) has launched an investigation into allegations of child sexual abuse in Rotherham. The BBC reports that South Yorkshire Police chief constable David Crompton asked the NCA to launch an investigation in the wake of the Alexis Jay’s investigation report, which revealed widespread abuse in the town.



New government figures show that more than 1.6m children – 85 per cent of all infants - are eating free school meals. The Department for Education data shows that 1.3m of those children have taken up the offer of a free hot lunch since the policy was launched in September.
