Health chiefs consider banning council tenants from smoking in their homes; rise in number of children being diagnosed with autism; and girl seriously injured following dog attack, all in the news today.

Council tenants could be banned from having cigarettes inside their own homes as part of efforts to protect children and residents from second-hand smoke. The Sun reports that new tenants could be required to sign an agreement pledging not to smoke before they move into housing association or local authority properties.


The number of Welsh schoolchildren with autism spectrum disorder has risen by more than 50 per cent in the past five years. The BBC reports that Welsh Government figures show there were 3,450 autistic pupils in schools in 2011, rising to 5,325 in 2016. National Autistic Society (NAS) Cymru said ongoing special educational needs reforms must be used "to make sure the needs of autistic children are always understood".


A two-year-old girl has been seriously injured after being mauled by up to five dogs as she played in a garden in Liverpool. The Guardian reports that the toddler was playing with friends in a relative's back garden when the dogs attacked her.


A 17-year-old has died after he was discovered by paramedics in north-east London late on Sunday night with a serious stab injury. The Guardian reports that London ambulance service called police at 11.31pm after finding the teenager on Walthamstow High Street. He was taken to hospital but died shortly afterwards.


The Association of Colleges has announced Dr Alison Birkinshaw, the current principal of York College, as its president-elect. Dr Birkinshaw will take over from current president Ian Ashman on 1 August.
