
Children whose fathers embrace parenthood are less likely to be troubled as they approach their teenage years, researchers have said. The Daily Mail reports an Oxford University study found that fathers who were emotionally committed and felt confident about parenthood in the first few months had better-behaved children 11 years later.
Former Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City player Paul Stewart has revealed he turned to drink and drugs during his career after suffering sexual abuse by a youth coach. The Guardian reports that the former England player said he was assaulted on a daily basis for four years by a coach who had told him he would "make him a star".
The husband of murdered teacher Ann Maguire has criticised a review into her death. Maguire, 61, was stabbed by student Will Cornick at Corpus Christi Catholic College in Leeds in 2014. The BBC reports that her husband Don said an investigation published earlier this month by Leeds Safeguarding Children Board, which said the killing could not have been prevented, "felt like the bare minimum".
The inquiry into child sexual abuse has "crumbled" and may be impossible to fix, a leading barrister has said. The BBC reports that Michael Mansfield QC said the best way forward was to have separate chairs overseeing different areas. The inquiry has been battling to keep the confidence of victims after losing its third chair and a succession of senior lawyers.
An organisation that was established by the late actor and philanthropist Paul Newman will donate £175,000 to 19 UK charities that empower children, it has been announced. The Newman's Own Foundation said each charity - which includes Manchester Young Lives and Hackney Empire - will be awarded a grant of up to £16,000 as part of the foundation's commitment to supporting young people.
A Scottish national charity for the support and delivery of community-based youth work has appointed a new chair. Dona Milne, who is a consultant in public health at NHS Lothian, has taken up the role at Youth Scotland for the next three years.
A total of 111 nurseries have applied for the "gold standard" in early years paediatric first aid, it has emerged. The National Day Nurseries Association, which is delivering Millie's Mark on behalf of the Department for Education, said 10 settings have already been awarded the mark.
