
The number of 16- to 18-year-olds not in education, employment or training (Neet) has reached its lowest ever recorded level. The government reports that there were 75,000 fewer 16- to 24-year-olds Neets between April and June this year than for the same period in 2010.
The number of pupils who passed their GCSEs has increased, but the number of top grades has fallen. The BBC reports that A* to C grades have increased from 68.8 per cent last year to 6.9 per cent this year, but A* grades fell by 0.1 of a percentage point.
Smarter children may be more likely to develop bipolar disorder later in life, according to a study. The Independent reports that children with a high IQ aged eight have an eightfold chance of developing the disorder by the time they are 23, according to scientists from the Universities of Bristol, Glasgow, Cardiff and Texas.
A Wolverhampton youth centre is looking to recruit 40 full-time and part-time members of staff and 100 volunteers before it opens next year. Run by youth charity OnSide, The Way Youth Zone will provide a range of activities for eight to 19-years-olds and young people under 25 with disabilities.
Children’s charity Place2Be has received funding of £100,000 to support its “Healthy Minds for Happy Futures” project. The grant from the Postcode Community Trust will help the charity deliver its mental health service over the next academic year to children in 36 schools across Cardiff, Brent and Leeds.
A review is to be carried out into how newborn babies with deteriorating health are cared for by hospitals and the community. Launched by the Care Quality Commission, inspectors will look into current practices in around 20 neonatal services offering different levels of care in England.
