Daily roundup 13 August: A-level results, charity risks and children's centres

Slight fall in top A-level grades; charities predicted to rethink operations in light of funding cuts; and Hounslow children's centre closure warning, all in the news today.

The proportion of top A-level grades has fallen slightly this year, but there has been a three per cent rise in the number of university places accepted. The BBC reports that A* and A grades were awarded to 25.9 per cent of entries, compared to 26 per cent last year, but overall passes rose by 0.1 percentage point.


Some of the UK's biggest charities may be forced to reconsider how they operate due to funding cuts, Amy Brettell, head of charities and social organisations at Zurich has warned. The insurer's Risk Charity survey states that charities need to remain aware of emerging risks that could threaten their future.


Closing children’s centres in Hounslow would have a “disastrous” effect on children’s early education, a teacher has warned. Get West London reports reception teacher Charlotte Moyes is among more than 600 people who have signed a petition opposing proposals by Hounslow Council to close four of 18 children’s centres and change the way those remaining are used.


A £400,000 project has been launched in Wales to help parents teach their children how to manage money. The BBC reports the scheme is funded by the Money Advice Service and Big Lottery Fund, and is expected to help around 1,000 parents and 1,600 children aged between three and 11-years-old.


A family run fostering service has been given until 17 August to make two changes to ensure it meets national regulations. The Eastern Daily Press reports Ofsted rated the Regional Foster Placement, which is used by Norfolk County Council, as "good” in all categories, but identified “a number of shortfalls”.
