
The UK's youngest mayor has been appointed at the age of 19. The Guardian reports that Terrence Smith has been appointed as mayor of Goole, in East Yorkshire, after being elected last year as councillor of the town's north-east ward for a four-year term.
Tottenham Hotspur Football Club and a leading private school have proposed a state sixth form in north London. The BBC reports the free school, which is planned for September 2017, will use staff and educational expertise from Highgate School, while Spurs will be the school’s main financial sponsor and provide premises.?
Protests are due to take place in Hampshire today against cuts to children’s centres that could affect thousands of parents and children. The Unite union has urged members of the public to join the protest against Hampshire County Council's plans to replace the current 54 children’s centres with 11 regional centres.
The case of a father who refused to pay a fine for taking his daughter on an unauthorised term-term holiday is due to be heard at the High Court today. The BBC reports that magistrates had ruled that Jon Platt had no case to answer as, overall, his daughter had attended school regularly. But Isle of Wight Council has asked the High Court to clarify whether a seven-day absence amounts to a child failing to attend regularly.
A complete ban on advertising unhealthy foods to children is being considered as a way to reduce childhood obesity. The BBC reports that the plan to restrict the promotion of foods high in fat, salt and sugar to under-16s is being consulted on by the Committee of Advertising Practice.
