Bullying in schools decreases; inquiry finds that half of stillborn deaths are avoidable; and calls for religious assemblies to be scrapped, all in the news today.

Fewer children in England are being bullied in schools, however cyberbullying is increasing, according to figures released by the Department for Education. The Guardian reports that there are 30,000 fewer children facing bullying now compared with a decade ago, but name-calling and social exclusion remain at similar levels.


The lives of half of stillborn babies born in the UK every year could be saved, according to an inquiry by the Department of Health. The Daily Mail reports that there are 600 avoidable stillborn deaths every year, with many the result of doctors and midwives failing to intervene.


The duty on British schools to hold religious assemblies should be scrapped, according a report by the University of Leicester. The BBC reports that a study by the university found that Christian assemblies could discriminate against other religions and there is no clear rationale for the duty.


A guide has been launched for young carers in England explaining their rights to assessment and support. Launched by the Carers Trust, the Know Your Rights guide aims to encourage young carers to ensure they receive the right assessment and support from their local authority.


The number of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children in Thurrock has increased four-fold since 2013, figures have revealed. The Thurrock Gazette reports 80 children arrived in the county this month, increasing from 45 in November last year and 21 in the same month of 2013.
