
Young people are deeply pessimistic about their ability to get on in Britain's "us and them society", social mobility tsar Alan Milburn has said. The BBC reports that Milburn said a survey conducted by the Social Mobility Commission found that young people "increasingly feel like they are on the wrong side of a profound unfairness".
A 15-year-old boy who took a loaded shotgun, 200 rounds of ammunition and a mask into a school has admitted possessing the weapon with intent to endanger life. The Telegraph reports that the boy dialled 999 after having "a change of heart", and told a call-handler he had mental health problems and had been thinking of harming others. Leamington Spa Youth Court was told the teenager also took ear plugs and a lock-knife with him to a school on Tuesday morning after removing the shotgun from a secure cabinet belonging to a relative.
Schoolgirls are "far stronger, resilient and feistier" than people think - and should be encouraged to take more risks, the head of the Girls' Day School Trust has said. The Daily Mail reports that Cheryl Giovannoni said British girls should not be wrapped up in cotton wool, and that parents and teachers do not need to be overly protective.
The number of children in care across Blackburn with Darwen has hit its highest level in three years, according to new figures. The Lancashire Evening Telegraph reports that in the three months up to March, there were 375 children in care, with 248 in foster care and 152 placed with in-house foster carers. There were 316 children in council care during the same period in 2015, which rose to 346 in March 2016 and 375 in March 2017.
Youth charity Young Devon has appointed a new chief executive. The charity has said that Andy Moreman, who established the Young Lambeth Co-op, will take over running the organisation.
