
The human rights of a 16-year-old boy were breached by his being kept in solitary confinement for four-and-a-half months, the High Court has ruled. The BBC reports that the High Court said the boy - referred to as AB - was unlawfully denied access to education and the ability to mix with other inmates. But it rejected claims his treatment at Feltham Young Offender Institution in London was "inhuman and degrading".
Nicola Sturgeon's drive to get more children from deprived backgrounds into university is backfiring on pupils who feel "devalued" because they are not academically inclined, her poverty adviser has warned. The Telegraph reports that Naomi Eisenstadt said the Scottish government's radical proposals for widening access to university mean schools are now under pressure to get pupils from disadvantaged families into higher education.
BBC's Panorama programme has uncovered evidence of repeated cover-ups of historical sex abuse in Britain's cadet forces. The BBC reports that victims have spoken for the first time of senior cadet leaders covering up complaints, and pressurising families against going to the police.
Politicians in Dorset have vowed to get spending under control, while also trying to protect vital services for vulnerable adults and children. The Bournemouth Echo reports that Dorset County Council is currently facing an overspend of £9.5m for this year, with the main source of overspending being children's services, on which the council currently forecasts it will overspend by £6m.
Head teachers in England are calling on MPs for answers on school funding shortages - saying that they are still no closer to knowing their budgets. The BBC reports that about 4,000 heads across 17 councils, mostly in southern England, are writing to their MPs warning that schools face job losses and cuts to subjects. They say that the current level of school funding is "unsustainable".
