Daily roundup 10 April: Restraint, carrots, and e-cigarettes

Investigation highlights scale of special school injuries following restraint incidents; senior Labour figure calls for better food education for children; and researchers warn of "gateway" nature of e-cigarettes, all in the news today.

Hundreds of children have been injured while being physically restrained in special schools, an investigation has found. The BBC reports that figures show there have been at least 731 injuries in the past three years with some young people being pinned face-down on the floor, while others were strapped into chairs.

Overweight children from disadvantaged backgrounds should be taught how to "grow a carrot" to help them learn about healthy eating, a senior Labour figure has suggested. The Independent reports that shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry argued that young people from struggling families are overweight because they learn bad eating habits.

E-cigarettes are a "gateway" to smoking among children, a study has warned. The Times reports that research has indicated that teenagers who would not otherwise have been tempted by real cigarettes were experimenting with new technology, and then moving on to tobacco.

Pressure on school budgets in England is leading to a narrower secondary curriculum, with teaching posts in some subjects being cut, unions have said. The BBC reports that research from the ATL and NUT unions has suggested that teachers of subjects not included in the EBacc league table measure are the most at risk.
