MP pledges to raise case of Italian woman whose child was taken at birth; more children being treated for eating disorders; and Labour seeks to strengthen law around underage smoking, all in the news today.

A woman has had her baby forcibly removed by Caesarean section and taken by social services in Essex, it has been claimed. The BBC reports that Liberal Democrat MP John Hemming, chair of the Justice for Families Campaign, has pledged to raise the case in Parliament. Hemming said the Italian woman had had a panic attack linked to her bipolar disorder and was sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

The number of children treated in hospital for eating disorders has tripled in four years, according to NHS figures. The Telegraph reports that 6,500 children and teenagers were treated in hospital in 2010/11 for conditions such as anorexia, compared with 1,718, in 2007/08.
