Schools failing to offer independent careers advice, say colleges; young men with eating disorders being missed by health services; and speech therapy in County Durham under threat from cuts, all in the news today.

Schools across the country are failing to provide independent careers advice and guidance, despite a statutory duty requiring them to, a survey suggests. Less than half of further education colleges surveyed by the Association of Colleges said schools in their area are providing the advice. Respondents said schools with sixth form are worst for offering information about college courses, with many schools refusing colleges to speak to their students.

Health workers are failing to identify and treat eating disorders in young men because of perceptions it is a “women’s illness”. The BBC reports findings of a study by researchers at the University of Oxford and University of Glasgow of 16- to 25-year-olds, which found that young men with eating disorders are “underdiagnosed, undertreated and underresearched”.
