Since 2008, almost all local authorities in England, and a number of voluntary organisations, have been taking part in the Newly Qualified Social Worker (NQSW) programme developed by the Children's Workforce Development Council.
The NQSW programme helps employers give all their newly qualified social workers regular supervision, with 10 per cent of their time set aside for training and development, and a managed workload.
Everyone on the programme works towards the same outcome statements, which set out what a social worker needs to know, understand and be able to do at the end of their first year in employment.
