Crowded homes hold back learning

Social Care
Children living in cramped homes are likely to have problems learning or behaving at school, a report by Barnardo's South West has found.

Homes Fit for Children? looked at how large families living in overcrowded homes can prevent children from achieving the five Every Child Matters outcomes and adversely affect their emotional and physical health. It also means children lack a quiet space to do their homework.

The report said schools should understand the impact poor housing has on children and provide extra support where possible or encourage them to attend extended services.

Dr Owen Gill, anti-poverty co-ordinator for Barnardo's South West, said: "Our acute lack of decent accommodation for large low-income families is having a huge effect on the lives of children across the South West."
