Coventry to make youth service cuts

1 min read Youth Work
Coventry City Council is overhauling its youth service in a bid to cut costs by 250,000 pounds.

The savings drive could lead to the loss of the equivalent of 9.3 full-time youth worker posts, as the number of hours worked by sessional staff is reduced, and a reduction in spending on back office services. The plans, devised by consultants PricewaterhouseCoopers, also advised the council to commission out more youth services to the voluntary sector.

But the Community and Youth Workers' Union said the recommendations were the work of "philistines". "It's one of the worst reports I've ever read," said Doug Nicholls, general secretary of the union. "It seeks to 'deprofessionalise' the youth service with its treatment of part-time workers and there has been no consultation with staff and only tokenistic consultation with young people."
