The applicant in the case was A, aged 20, who sought orders in respect of herself and her six younger siblings against their parents and grandmother.
A alleged that her parents tried to force her to marry during a family trip to Bangladesh and that she only escaped with the help of the British High Commission. Following her escape, though, her parents forced B to go through a marriage ceremony against her will. The parents denied this.
After B left home following an incident where the police were called, she disclosed that she had been forced to go through a marriage ceremony in Bangladesh and that her parents had told her just prior to the first court hearing that she was to deny that a wedding had taken place and if she did not do so the younger children would be taken into care. The parents later admitted that B had married but that she was a fully consenting party to the marriage.
