Councils forced to foot bill for LSC staff redundancies

1 min read Education
Councils are being left to pick up the redundancy bill for former Learning and Skills Council (LSC) staff after funding for their salaries was slashed by 42 per cent, it has emerged.

Around 700 LSC staff moved over to work in councils as part of the 16 to19 transfer in April this year. The previous Labour government hadagreed to provide councils with a grant to pay for these employees. Butthe coalition government has now cut the grant as part of widerreductions to public spending.

Frankie Sulke, 14 to 19 lead for the Association of Directors ofChildren's Services, voiced concerns at the figures revealed at theNational Children and Adult Conference in Manchester. She said the 42per cent cut would force local authorities to make very toughdecisions.

"Because the grant is being cut, you're going to have to decide what todo because no grants are ringfenced," she explained. "That will mean anumber of redundancies."
