COUNCIL FUNDING: Leicester groups handed a reprieve

A number of children's playgroups have been thrown a lifeline after Leicester Council held out the possibility of funding them in future.

Many voluntary organisations had faced closure under the council's original proposals to slash its grants by 2m (News, 14-20 January). But, at the council's budget meeting last week, councillors voted to limit the cuts and open the door to possible recommissioning from other sources.

Nine adventure playgrounds and the St Matthew's Children Action Group will be considered during the review, as will the Lame Duck Project and the Bangladeshi Youth and Community Shomiti.

The Belgrave Playgroup was granted a reprieve, while the Young Muslims Association and the Leicester Asian Youth Association were given 12 months to seek alternative funding.
