Council plans to cut early help services by £4m

A council has announced plans to cut early help funding by £4m one the next four years, with 11 children's centres at risk.

Leicester City Council said it has already saved £100m across the local authority due to government spending cuts, but needs to find an additional £55m in savings.

?As part of plans to slash £4m from its early help services, the council plans to continue providing council-run services at 12 of the council's 23 children's centres, with the fate of the remaining 11 yet undecided.

"Stay and play sessions" would also only be offered twice a week instead of five times a week, the documents show, and activities with parents, which are held every week, would instead take place every two weeks.

The council has also proposed "a gradual reduction" in its £1.1m adventure playgrounds budget from Spring 2017 to £550,000 by 2020. ??

There are currently 10 adventure playgrounds that provide supervised indoor and outdoor play activities for children aged five-to 15-years-old in the city, which are run by different service providers.

??"The council will work with adventure play providers to determine initial and eventual reduction levels, help them source alternative funding, expand their current range of services and provide volunteers with new skills training," council consultation documents say.

?"The transfer of buildings to adventure playgrounds' ownership is also being considered."??

??Leicester City Mayor Peter Soulsby said the council is dealing with "the worst financial position" it has ever faced as a result of government spending cut.??

Sarah Russell, assistant city mayor for children's services, added: "If there were any other way of making these savings we would take it, but the reality is that with £55m of cuts to be made, children's services can't be protected.

"Before drawing up these proposals we looked very closely at which services people use in each part of the city to get a clear idea of local need. ??

"We now really need the views and ideas of our staff and service users to help us shape these proposals before any final decisions are made." ??

A 12-week consultation process is under way and will finish on 6 December.? A review of the council's youth service will also take place next year.
