COT DEATHS: Thousands of care cases under review

1 min read
Thousands of cases where children were taken into care are being reviewed after the Court of Appeal's revealed its reasons for overturning Angela Cannings' conviction for murder.

The Attorney General, Lord Goldsmith, started the ball rolling by announcing a review of 258 convictions involving the murder, manslaughter or infanticide of infants under two by their parents. The 54 cases where the mother or father is still in jail have highest priority.

Solicitor General Harriet Harman also confirmed that civil cases involving children taken into care because of fears that their parents may harm them would be included in the review. This could cover 5,000 cases.

The Scottish Children's Reporters Administration will conduct a similar review in Scotland, and an inquiry to devise a better system of investigating cot deaths is being headed by Helena Kennedy QC.
