Cornwall legal expert helps overhaul child protection in Falklands alliance

An unlikely alliance has arisen over the past year that has seen Cornwall County Council working with the Falkland Islands Government (FIG) to develop a new approach to safeguarding the island's children. Here, the key officers in the partnership reflect on what they have learned from the experience.

Barry Elsby, member of the Falkand Islands' Legislative Assembly, explains the background to the partnership: "The Falkland Islands are a remote British Overseas territory, just off the tip of South America. It is self-financing and self-governing, and receives no financial aid from the UK apart from the provision for defence of the Islands. For a country of about 3,000 people, we have excellent education and medical facilities, but we had become aware that our legislation in relation to children was out of date and needed totally re-drafting. We could have hired someone from London, but our experience is that people coming from more rural areas seem better able to understand the unique way of life on the Islands."
