Consultation - Review of Personal, Social, Health and Economics (PSHE) Education

What is it all about? Alongside the review of the national curriculum, the government is also seeking views on topics included in PSHE education and areas that people feel should be included. Making PSHE education a statutory subject within the national curriculum has been ruled out but elements of PSHE could become statutory if there is evidence of their benefit to pupils. There are no plans to change the law on sex education.

What are the main points? The government wants to find out what core outcomes people think PSHE education should achieve and what pupils should be expected to learn through PSHE. It also hopes to receive responses relating to how PSHE can be improved, what elements should be made statutory and how schools can better decide for themselves what pupils need to know. The consultation calls for up-to-date evidence to back up answers provided.

Who can have their say? Professionals working in schools, pupils, parents and groups interested in PSHE education are all invited to respond to the consultation.

When is the deadline? 30 November. Responses can be completed online at www.education.gov.uk/consultations
