Gibb faces criticism over exclusion of PSHE from curriculum review

Schools minister Nick Gibb has been forced to defend the government's decision not to include personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE) in its wider review of the curriculum after facing criticism from a group of peers.

Addressing the House of Lords HIV and Aids in the UK select committee, Gibb said the government was poised to announce the remit of an internal review of PSHE.

When questioned by chairman of the committee Lord Fowler as to why the government had not included PSHE in its review of the curriculum, instead opting for an internal review, Gibb said: "There isn’t a set body of knowledge attached to a subject like PSHE as there is with history or physics or chemistry.

"Because of that, the process we have devised for the National Curriculum review, I don’t think, is appropriate for PSHE, which initially needs an internal review and eventually much wider consultation."
