After raising the age of sale for tobacco from 16 to 18, the government is asking what further action it should take.

- I need to hear some good news about the UK these days.

Well, I'll bet you didn't know that the UK comes top in a European league table rating countries on their approaches to tobacco control. More importantly, smoking rates are going down. - Public education, health warnings, hypnosis - that kind of thing?

The government's overall strategy addresses a number of areas, including: effective communications and education campaigns; reducing tobacco advertising, marketing and promotion; and reducing its availability and supply. This latest consultation focuses on: reducing smoking rates and health inequalities; tackling the supply of cheap tobacco; and supporting people of any age to quit or, for those who can't, looking at the potential of a harm reduction approach to helping them deal with their addiction.
