Currently, non-means-tested funding is available to those undertaking diplomas but not to those studying a degree. However, an indication from the Nursing and Midwifery Council that the minimum entry qualification for the profession will soon change to a degree means this funding discrepancy must be reviewed.
The consultation will also look at other ways to improve the funding scheme, such as whether medical and dental students from disadvantaged backgrounds should receive targeted funding. The results of the consultation will be published in early 2010 and will aim to break down any unnecessary funding barriers to people who have the right skills for the profession.
