What's it all about? Education Secretary Michael Gove has commissioned Lord Bew to carry out a review of the testing and accountability system for primary schools in England.
Evidence suggests that holding schools objectively to account for pupils' progress still drives educational improvements. However, concerns have been raised about this system in Year 6 (Key Stage 2). The review underpins the government's commitment to ensuring schools and teachers are trusted to exercise their professional discretion when it comes to being accountable for their pupils' education.
What are the main points? The review will look at how best to ensure that schools are properly and fairly accountable to pupils and parents; how parents will get good quality information on their child's progress; how the primary school assessment system can improve attainment standards and narrow educational gaps; and how the system can be made less bureaucratic and more cost effective.
